It hit me that Scotland has two great aquatic folklore characters – the Selkies and the Kelpies. So I wanted to somehow bring them together, which most obvious approach would be some form of conflict, maybe a war over their water territories. But then I wouldn’t be bringing in the highland clans, which I wanted to do. So a romance, a tragic romance at that. And I tried to stay true to the many aspects attributed to both creatures, such as the selkies hiding their seal skins when in human form. And from there the story wrote itself, which seems to be what happens with me.
